Camera Club

Group leader :- Bill Walker

U3A Camera Club

The Camera Club group is aimed at people with a basic knowledge of photography who wish to improve the quality of their photographs and who want to gain a better understanding of digital photography. We now have about 14 members of differing backgrounds and abilities ranging from professional down to beginner. We meet at Kirkton Village Hall from September until April on the second Friday of the month at 10am. In the summer, meetings are usually in the form of a field trip. Previously we have had trips to Portrack House gardens, Threave gardens, Castramont Bluebell Wood, Bellymack Farm for the red kites and Caerlaverock Wetlands Centre.

We have a full syllabus and topics have included Picasa photographic manipulation software, Photoshop, the GB cup slide show and discussion about our own photographs. We have a photo competition at Christmas time and we also produce slide shows of our work which are presented to the assembled U3A at their June meeting. The group has also participated in the annual inter-club photo competition organised by the local camera clubs in Dumfries & Galloway.

Anyone interested is welcome to come along and see what we do, without obligation. Discover something new.

We had a good meeting at Kirkton on Friday, September 22 and there were nine people present for the competition (each person presenting 10 holiday photos). Using Bridge, Joyce organised and showed them on her computer. The winners were selected by a show of hands and there were prizes supplied by Geoff for Best photos (Alex), Most humorous (Terry Gilroy), best family (Joyce) and most interesting (John Young). Thanks once again to Esther and Carol for doing the tea break.

The next meeting will be on Friday, October 13 at Kirkton and Bob Shepherd has kindly agreed to talk to us. His topic will be "What makes a Good Photograph and What are Judges looking for". Unfortunately I will be away. On October 27, technology permitting, I will be showing how to make a photobook using Aldi software. I have a few samples which will be shown but if anyone else has photobooks please bring them along.

In the new year, we have the inter-club competition, probably in March and our own internal competition to be judged by Alan McNeish on February 9. Please submit your shots by the Dec 8 meeting. Last year we each submitted up to 6 shots for the inter-club and I suggest the same for our own competition. If you only submit one set of 6, these shots will be considered for both competitions unless you state otherwise.

Hope to see you on Oct 27 regards
